CHA Statement on the End of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Declarations

May 11, 2023

WALLINGFORD – The Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) released the following statement regarding the end of the federal and state COVID-19 public health emergency declarations on May 11, 2023.

To-date, there have been more than 82,000 COVID-19 patients admitted to Connecticut’s acute care hospitals, with COVID-19 hospitalizations peaking at 1,972 patients on April 21, 2020.

“Over the last three years, Connecticut hospitals, health systems, and healthcare workers have been steadfast in the face of uncertainty and unimaginable loss. Connecticut was impacted severely and early on by the COVID-19 pandemic and hospitals and health systems responded rapidly, collaboratively, and exceptionally. They provided immediate care, established widespread testing and call centers, advanced treatment, and played a major role in making vaccinations accessible in all communities. It was through communication and teamwork among hospitals and with our state leaders and healthcare and community partners across the state that Connecticut was able to overcome enormous challenges to provide quality care. The healthcare workforce never wavered. The work of frontline heroes saved lives

“CHA mourns the lives lost and we extend our deepest gratitude to all healthcare workers, frontline heroes, and our partners across the healthcare delivery system and government who united to launch an unprecedented emergency response to a global pandemic. We faced the crisis head on, and grew stronger together. The work must continue.

“The end of the federal and state public health emergency declarations is momentous, but it does not stop the work that continues at hospitals and health systems every day to address new and persistent challenges, to treat sicker patients than we saw before the pandemic, to address the upstream drivers of health disparities exacerbated by the pandemic, and to prepare for future emergency response needs. CHA will continue to be there to support this work moving forward.”
